RV Cover Leg Height Guide: Measuring Clearance for AC Units, Vents, and Antennas

Your RV probably isn't as tall as the sticker says. That number on the manufacturer spec sheet almost always stops at the roofline. It skips the rooftop AC unit, the vent covers, and the antenna sticking up another foot or more. Get your RV cover leg height wrong because of that gap, and you risk scraping a unit, denting a vent cover, or ending up with a structure a few inches too short to actually drive your rig into.

This guide walks you through how to measure your RV's true height, accessories included, how much clearance AC units, vents, and antennas typically add, and how to land on the right leg height before you order your Get Carports RV cover.

Key Highlights

• Standard rooftop AC units add about 12 to 14 inches above your RV's roofline. Low-profile units add roughly 8 to 11 inches.
• Roof vents typically add 2 to 4 inches when closed. Never measure with a vent open or a crank-up antenna raised.
• Antennas and satellite domes can add another 12 to 18 inches, often from a different spot on the roof than your AC unit.
• We recommend 12 to 18 inches of clearance above your RV's tallest point, not just its body height.
• Leg height (also called eave height) sets your real entry clearance. A taller peak at the center of the roof does not change that number.
• A-frame and vertical roofs give you more headroom at the center of the structure, but the leg height at the posts stays the same either way.
• Design Your Building at GetCarports.com or call 866-681-7846 to confirm the right leg height for your RV before you order.

This piece focuses on the measuring and the math. If you're still weighing height against snow load, wind exposure, and structural upgrades for your RV cover, start with our RV Carport Buying Guide, then come back here to get your exact number.

What "Leg Height" Means on an RV Cover (and Why It Isn't Just About Your RV's Body)

Leg height is the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the post, right where the roof panel begins. You'll also see it listed as eave height on most Get Carports RV carports and covers and RV carport listings. It's the number that determines whether your RV actually fits underneath, and it's set by the shortest point of clearance along your drive-in path, not the tallest point of the roof.

That distinction matters. A vertical or A-frame roof rises higher at the center than it does at the eaves. Your RV doesn't get the benefit of that extra peak height unless it's parked dead center, and even then, only for the stretch of roof directly above it. As you pull in past the posts, leg height is what decides whether you clear.

Eave Height, Leg Height, and Peak Height

Leg height and eave height mean the same thing on a Get Carports RV cover: the height at the post, measured straight up from the ground. Peak height is the height at the very top of the roof, at the center ridge. On a regular roof, that gap is small, often just a few inches. On an A-frame or vertical roof, the difference between eave and peak can run a foot or more, depending on the width and pitch.

If you're comparing structures by height, compare leg height to leg height. Judging your clearance needs against a peak height number instead is an easy way to end up short.

How to Measure Your RV's True Height Before You Order

Grabbing the number off your RV's window sticker or owner's manual is a start, not a finish. Manufacturers usually measure to the roofline, before any accessories go on. You need the number that includes everything sitting on top of it.

What You'll Need

• A tape measure, at least 25 feet
• A stable ladder, only if your RV roof and rung height make it safe to check accessories up close
• A helper to hold the tape or spot you on the ladder
• A notepad or your phone to record each number as you go
• A flat, level spot to park while you measure

Measure From the Ground Up

Park on level ground first. Uneven ground throws your numbers off by a few inches in either direction, and a few inches is exactly what you're trying to nail down here.

Extend your tape measure straight up from the ground to the top of your RV's body, the roofline itself, not including anything mounted on top. Write that number down. That's your base height.

Measure Every Accessory Separately

Now go accessory by accessory. Measure from the roofline up to the top of your rooftop AC unit. Do the same for every vent cover, and for your antenna or satellite dome, making sure it's lowered or stowed the way it'll actually sit while your RV is parked under the cover.

Don't stack these numbers together. What matters is your single tallest point, measured from the ground, not the sum of every accessory added up. If your AC unit adds 13 inches and your satellite dome adds 15 inches at a different spot on the roof, your tallest point is base height plus 15 inches, not base height plus 28.

Never climb onto an RV roof without a stable ladder and a spotter, and confirm your roof can actually bear your weight first. Some thinner rooflines can't.

How Much Clearance Do AC Units, Vents, and Antennas Actually Need?

If you don't have a ladder handy yet, or you just want a starting point before you go measure your own rig, here's what these accessories typically add above the roofline.

Roof Accessory	Typical Added Height	What to Watch For
Standard rooftop AC unit	12" to 14"	Usually the tallest accessory on the roof
Low-profile rooftop AC unit	8" to 11"	Worth the upgrade if you're tight on clearance
Roof vent, closed	2" to 4"	Confirm every vent is shut before you measure
Roof vent, open or cranked up	10" or more	Never store your RV with vents open
TV or radio antenna, retracted	2" to 4"	Crank it down fully before parking
Satellite dome, stationary	12" to 18"	Often the tallest fixed point after the AC unit

These are typical ranges, not guarantees. Your owner's manual or the spec sheet for your specific rooftop AC model or satellite antenna will give you an exact number. When in doubt, measure it yourself. Ladders don't lie.

Calculating the Right Leg Height for Your RV Cover

Our Recommended Formula

This is the math we walk customers through every day:

RV body height (ground to roofline) + tallest single accessory height + 12 to 18 inches of clearance = your minimum leg height.

Say your RV measures 10'6" from the ground to the roofline. Add a standard rooftop AC at 13 inches, and you're at about 11'7". Add 15 inches of clearance to that number, and you land right around 12'10". That's your minimum leg height, the number you'd round up from when picking an available option.

Already landing near 13 feet? Compare your measurements with the 18'x30'x13' Metal RV Carport. It gives you a real-world 13-foot-height option to compare against the clearance number you just calculated.

Why 12 to 18 Inches of Clearance Matters

That extra clearance isn't padding for the sake of padding. Tires lose a little air over time and drop your RV's height slightly. Air suspension settles when it isn't aired up. A parking pad that looks level to the eye rarely is, not perfectly. None of that is dramatic on its own, but stack a soft tire with an unlevel spot, and a tight clearance number turns into a scraped AC housing.

Lean toward the higher end of that range, closer to 18 inches, if you deal with heavy snow, park on ground that isn't perfectly level, or plan to add a taller AC unit or satellite system down the road.

Roof Style Changes Your Center Clearance, Not Your Leg Height

Roof style won't change the number you need at the posts, but it does change how much breathing room you get once you're parked underneath.

Roof Style	Pitch	Clearance Behavior	Best For
Regular roof	Slight, rounded	Peak height sits just a few inches above leg height	Simple builds, milder climates
A-frame roof	Moderate, peaked	Noticeably more headroom at center than at the legs	Extra breathing room without paying for a taller leg height
Vertical roof	Moderate to steep, peaked	Similar center headroom to A-frame, sheds snow and rain faster	Heavy snow, high rain, or coastal areas

If your tallest accessory sits near the center of your RV's roof rather than off to one side, an A-frame or vertical roof can give you a little extra breathing room without paying for a taller leg height across the whole structure. Our carport roof style guide breaks down regular, A-frame, and vertical roofs in more depth if you're still deciding.

Need more room around a larger RV? See the 30'x45'x12' Vertical RV Carport for an example of a wider, longer vertical-roof configuration built around RV and vehicle coverage.

One more thing worth knowing before you lock in a number. Going taller changes more than clearance. A taller leg height catches more wind, so anchoring matters more too. Our metal carport anchoring guide walks through ground, concrete, and asphalt anchoring if you're ordering a taller structure.

Common Leg Height Mistakes That Cost RV Owners Money

• Measuring the RV, not the RV plus accessories. The body height on the spec sheet is only part of the number you actually need.
• Stacking accessory heights instead of finding the single tallest point. Your AC unit and your antenna don't add together unless they happen to sit at the exact same spot.
• Measuring with the antenna raised or a vent propped open. Measure everything in its stowed, parked position, the way it'll actually sit under your cover.
• Skipping the clearance margin. Ordering to the exact inch leaves zero room for a soft tire, an unlevel pad, or a little settling over time.
• Confusing peak height with leg height. A tall center peak on an A-frame or vertical roof doesn't help you if your AC unit sits near the edge of the roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does RV cover leg height include room for my AC unit and antenna?

No. Leg height is just the height of the structure at the posts. You need to measure your RV's total height, including your rooftop AC unit, vents, and antenna, then add clearance on top of that number before choosing a leg height.

2. How much extra clearance should I add above my RV's actual height?

We recommend 12 to 18 inches above your RV's tallest point.

3. What's the difference between leg height, eave height, and peak height?

Leg height and eave height mean the same thing: the height at the post, measured straight up from the ground. Peak height is the height at the center ridge of the roof, which sits higher than the eaves on an A-frame or vertical roof.

4. Should I measure my RV with the antenna up or down?

Measure it down, in the position it'll actually sit in while your RV is parked under the cover. Raised antennas and open vents give you a taller number that doesn't reflect real-world clearance.

5. Does a vertical or A-frame roof give me more clearance than a regular roof?

At the center of the structure, yes.

6. What leg heights does Get Carports offer for RV covers?

We build RV covers with leg heights up to 16 feet to fit tall Class A motorhomes, toy haulers, and rigs with raised AC systems. Call 866-681-7846 or design your building online, and we'll help you land on the right number for your specific RV.

Conclusion

Getting your RV cover leg height right comes down to one thing: measuring your RV's true height, accessories included, not just the number off the spec sheet. Add your tallest single accessory to your body height, build in 12 to 18 inches of clearance, and you've got a number you can order with confidence.

Roof style and structural upgrades matter too, and we cover those in more depth in our RV Carport Buying Guide. When you're ready, Design Your Building at GetCarports.com or call 866-681-7846 and we'll help you land on the right leg height the first time.
